A Letter from the Dean of Scout
January 2013
Welcome to Scout from the University of California! I believe in Scout’s mission of providing innovative, interactive online education to students throughout California and beyond. As Dean, I find that my professional experiences as a California public school teacher have provided me with insight into the needs of K-12 students, teachers, administrators, and parents. We all want our children to achieve their greatest potential, but the reality of education in California is that resources are limited. That is why I am so excited about the possibilities Scout presents: Scout increases students’ access to high quality educational resources – resources to which they may not otherwise have access.
The current state of education is such that school districts limit the number of classes they offer, reduce or eliminate summer school programs, and restrict the number of students who may take AP classes. Add to that the scheduling conflicts, limited classr
oom space, and accommodations for students with special needs and English learners, and it is easy to see why painful and limiting decisions are made.
But – these are just some of the challenging areas where Scout can help.
As you explore the Scout website and use our courses, you will see that they are adaptable to a variety of needs; some schools use our courses as standalone courses, while others use our resources as supplemental course materials. You will find that as a non-profit organization staffed with deeply dedicated professional educators, we are equally happy to work with you whether you have 1,000 students to enroll or just one – we want our resources to be used to help our students succeed.
Wishing you the best of luck in the coming school year.
Lynda M. Rogers, Ed.D.
